Talladega ’87 changed sport forever

Posted By on May 18, 2012

This weekend is the 25th anniversary of the crash that brought restrictor plates to NASCAR for keeps. I was there. And whenever I think of those moments on the brink of a catastrophe that could have destroyed a sport, Im more tolerant of all the aggravations of plate racing.

Le Mans 55 was my first thought, during the seconds Bobby Allisons car sailed backward, flying, it surely seemed, right into the packed main grandstands of Talladega Superspeedway, tearing down catch-fencing like so much tissue paper.

A thousand people was my other thought.

To flesh out those fragments: This could be worse even than the worst disaster in the history of motor...

Obama makes it official: He’s running for reelection

Posted By on May 17, 2012

We know what you’re thinking: Hasn’t he been running for reelection for months? Years?

Well, yes, that’s the way it is for all first-term presidents. But just as Mitt Romney pivoted from the primaries and caucuses once he’d virtually been declared the Republican nominee (don’t tell Ron Paul), so Obama will try to reignite 2008′s “fired up, ready to go” spirit at campus rallies Saturday at Ohio State and Virginia Commonwealth.

Gone is the campaign slogan “Hope and change,” replaced by “Forward.” Or as Politico.com put it in a headline:...

The law also covers all domestic goods and products manufactured through joint ventures between Iranian and foreign companies, Vaezi said, underlining that all such goods,...

Josh Smith: Celtics ‘running plays way more harder’

Posted By on May 16, 2012

After the Celtics and Hawks were separated by just four points through the first three games of their series, Rajon Rondo, Paul Pierce amp; Co. put a 22-point whooping on Atlanta, and it wasnt even that close.

The Celtics led by as many as 37 points, taking a 3-1 series lead with a chance to end the series on Tuesday.

They shot the mess out of it tonight, said Hawks forward Josh Smith, who returned from the left knee injury that kept him out of Game 3. Im watching it and being real observant when Im on the bench. Theyre just running the plays way more harder than we are. Whatever play is called, you know, Ray Allen is running off screens 100 miles...

New York Yankees 10 Kansas City Royals 4 – as it happened

Posted By on May 16, 2012

Preamble: Good afternoon. Its been a troubled road trip to KC for the New York Yankees. Most shocking, of course, was the terrible injury to Mariano Rivera. All true sports fans wish him the very best on the road to recovery and hope that The Greatest Closer Ever comes back. He is certainly talking the good talk:

Im coming back. Write it down in big letters. Im not going down like this. God willing and given the strength, Im coming back. I love to play the game. I dont think, to me, going out like this is the right way. … I dont think like that. With the strength of the Lord, I have to continue.

We all hope to see you back, Mariano....

Doubt surrounds Carroll’s FA Cup header

Posted By on May 15, 2012

OPINION:

You do get sick of hearing the repeated calls for goal-line technology in football.

But it would have been nice to know if Andy Carrolls header went in for Liverpool against FA Cup winners Chelsea.

It was the most dramatic moment of the weekend. Down 2-1 and dominating the match at the time, it was an amazing moment for so many reasons.

Firstly because Carrolls header was actually on target but secondly, and most importantly, it was an amazing save by Chelsea goalkeeper Peter Cech.

To have the strength in his palm to hold out the ferocious effort while falling back without the use of his feet...

Ramsay running for third Marathon City Council term

Posted By on May 14, 2012

Incumbent City Councilman Dick Ramsay filed Wednesday to seek a third consecutive two-year term in office.

Ramsay, a private pilot, has pushed hard in recent years to have the city of Marathon designated as an official federal port of entry through Florida Keys Marathon Airport and City of Marathon Marina. He says he wants to see that work through.

This important designation will provide long-lasting multi-level economic boosts for Marathon and the Middle Keys, but being awarded this distinctive designation isnt quick and easy, Ramsay said in a statement.
